Just a few days ahead of the release of ‘Kaathal – The Core’, the Mammootty and Jyothika starrer film has been banned in Kuwait and Qatar. It’s alleged that the film’s plot has a tinge of homosexuality, which could be the reason for it getting this ban.
The film, which is set to be released in theatres on November 23, has now been banned by the governments of Kuwait and Qatar. This isn’t the first time that an Indian film has faced this fate in these countries. Many Indian films have recently been banned in the two nations owing to plots that do not fit their ideals. ‘Kaathal – The Core’ is directed by Jeo Baby, who is popularly known for directing the massive hit ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’.
With ‘Kaathal – The Core’ Mammootty and Jyotika have joined forces for the first time. The trailer for the film was just released, and it piqued the interest of the viewers. Have a look at it right here:
While the film has been banned in Kuwait and Qatar only days before its premiere, the reason is yet unclear. According to reports, the film’s plot revolves around homosexuality, which is being alleged as one the probable reasons for it getting banned in these two nations.
For the unversed, ‘Kaathal – The Core’s story revolves around George Devassy (Mammootty), who is a decorated official who recently retired from a co-operative bank and lives with his wife Omana (Jyotika), daughter Ferni and Geroge’s father Devassy. On a Sunday morning, after church rituals, George decides to contest for the upcoming Panchayat Elections and gives his nomination. But to everyone’s shock, two days later his wife Omana files for a divorce in the family court stating that George is in a homosexual relationship for the last few years with Thankan, his friend who runs a driving school in the same village. The news spreads like wildfire across the village and the allegation becomes a grave issue with George’s candidateship becoming doubtful. Omana does not see George’s sexual orientation as a crime, only wanting a divorce, but George strongly opposes these allegations. The film explores the politics of society’s mindset towards homosexuals.
‘Kaathal – The Core’ will also be screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). The film is jointly written by Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria. Produced by Mammootty Kampany, the film has music composed by Matthews Pulickan, cinematography by Salu K Thomas and editing by Francies Louis.
