AAP Candidates Jailed Sanjay Singh, Ex-DWC Chief Swati Maliwal Emerge Win Unopposed Rajya Sabha Elections

Three unopposed Aam Aadmi Party candidates Sanjay Singh, Swati Maliwal and ND Gupta have won the Rajya Sabha elections on Friday.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members Sanjay Singh, Swati Maliwal, and ND Gupta emerged victorious in the Rajya Sabha elections held on Friday, having been elected unopposed.

The trio submitted their nominations on January 8 in the national capital.

In a strategic move, AAP decided to renew the tenures of jailed Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for a second term.

Swati Maliwal, former Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)?entered?the Rajya Sabha for the first time and?succeeded Sushil Gupta.

Following the unopposed victory, AAP's Rajya Sabha candidates, namely Sanjay Singh, Swati Maliwal, and ND Gupta were presented with certificates by Returning Officer Ashish Kundra at?Delhi Transport Department's office in Civil Lines.

Expressing her commitment, Swati Maliwal, now a Rajya Sabha MP, affirmed her dedication to fulfilling duties with true devotion and honesty. Maliwal told ANI, "A new responsibility is starting today. Thousands of women came today to encourage them. I assure all the people of Delhi that I will serve you with true devotion and honesty. Gratitude to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal."

Sanjay Singh's wife Anita Singh spoke to PTI, saying,?"It's a day of happiness for us. We are missing him (Sanjay Singh), but the lion has come out once, and he will come out again."

Singh, currently jailed in a money laundering case related to the revoked Delhi excise policy, arrived at the transport department office under tight security to submit his nomination papers. According to PTI, Singh was escorted to the transport department office where he obtained his certificate.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the newly elected MPs of the party. In a post on X, he wrote "Many congratulations and best wishes to the three leaders of Aam Aadmi Party elected to Rajya Sabha. I am confident that you will strongly raise the issues of the common people in Parliament and fight for the rights of the people of Delhi,"?in Hindi.
