What Is The Liquor Policy Case?
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested on alleged corruption charges linked to the contentious liquor policy case.
The arrest took place at Kejriwal's residence, where officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrived to conduct a search. Following a two-hour-long search and questioning session, Kejriwal was taken into custody around 9 pm on Thursday.
The allegations against Kejriwal stem from an ongoing investigation into the liquor policy implemented by the Delhi Government in November 2021.
The policy overhaul, which sparked controversy, included reducing the legal drinking age to 21, privatising liquor stores, and revising licensing criteria based on sales performance and pricing.
Moreover, the annual license fee saw a substantial hike from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 75 lakh. Despite its initial rollout, the policy was later scrapped due to reported violations.
According to the Enforcement Directorate, the excise policy was allegedly orchestrated to favour certain private companies, with Kejriwal and other AAP leaders purportedly involved in a scheme to provide a 12 per cent wholesale business profit to select entities.
Two other AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh have previously been arrested in connection with this case.
