Assam Flood Situation Improves As Affected Districts Fall To 14

A total of 43,064 people are taking shelter in 61 relief camps in Assam because of floods. Another 104 relief distribution centres are also functional.

In the past 24 hours, the flood situation in Assam has improved and the number of affected districts and people have fallen.?

The number of affected people came down to about 2.70 lakh and added the number of affected districts came down to 14, an official bulletin said on Sunday. The number of affected people was 4,07,700 in 15 districts till Saturday.

Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon and Nalbari districts are still reeling under floods.?

The sub-divisions (independent) of Bajali and Tamulpur are also under the deluge, while urban flooding was reported from Kokrajhar, the ASDMA report said.?

Altogether 43,064 people are taking shelter in 61 relief camps. Another 104 relief distribution centres are also functional.?

A crop area of 5,936.63 hectares is under flood waters, the ASDMA report said.?

Three embankments have been breached in Darrang district in the last 24 hours, while seven have been affected in Nalbari.?

Houses have been damaged in Nalbari and Tamulpur, while roads in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Golaghat, Karimganj and Nalbari, and bridges in Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar have also been damaged by flood waters.?

Erosion has been reported from Biswanath, Chirang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Majuli, Sonitpur and Tamulpur.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and assured him of all possible help to deal with the flood situation.?

"Due to heavy rain, the people in parts of Assam are braving a flood-like situation. I have spoken to CM Shri @himantabiswa Ji and assured all possible assistance," Shah tweeted.?

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are already on the ground conducting relief and rescue operations, and adequate forces are on standby, he added.?

Reacting to Shah's tweet, Sarma expressed gratitude for the "proactive response" and concern regarding the flood situation in the state.?

"The Assam Government is on high alert and providing all assistance to the affected persons," the CM said.

An Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said the flood-hit population in the state has decreased to 2,71,522 in 14 districts, which also includes two sub-divisions (independent).?

The death toll in this year's floods remained at three with no death reported in the last 24 hours.?

More than 120 people were rescued and shifted to safer places in Assam by (NDRF which has deployed ten teams to undertake flood relief operations in the state, an official said on Sunday.

"A total of ten teams have been deployed in Assam that are conducting rescue and evacuation from low-lying areas. So far, 123 persons and several cattle have been shifted to safer places," an NDRF spokesperson said in an update issued at 6:30 pm.

Each NDRF team has about 35-40 rescuers.

The spokesperson said these teams are also assisting the local authorities in distribution of relief material.

The situation is currently under control and the teams are carrying out reconnaissance of the low-lying areas, he said.

So far, three persons have lost their lives in this year's first wave of flood in different parts of the state, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

According to an ASDMA report, over 4,07,700 people are impacted by the deluge in nine districts of Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nalbari and Udalguri.
