India did very well chasing. They won five in five batting second. Now, they are defending even better, with the ball -- dismissing holders England with 89 balls to spare for a 100-run win. Asked to bat first by England in match 29 of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, India's famed batting line-up crumbled. Except for skipper Rohit Sharma, none of the Indian batters managed to reach 50, and the result was a below-par score of 229/9 in Lucknow. But that was only the first half of the show. Jasprit Bumrah, who added crucial runs with the bat, rocked England with the wickets of Dawid Malan and Joe Root, off successive deliveries. Then, Mohammed Shami removed Joe Root and Ben Stokes in quick succession. 39/4 in 9.1 overs, and England's title defence was as good as over.?(Scorecard?| Points Table?| Report)

And it got over soon enough. After Bumrah and Shami's act, Kuldeep Yadav weaved his spin, first by bamboozling Jos Buttler and then trapping Liam Livingstone in front. England got all out 129 in 34.5 overs for a fifth defeat -- a first for the Three Lions in the World Cup -- in six outings. Defending champions, in both ODIs and T20Is, are out of the semi-finals reckoning. They can now have a maximum of eight points, but four teams are already with eight or more. India, on the contrary, are already on cloud nine. Up next, India take on Sri Lanka at Mumbai's Wankhede, which according to many, is a replay of the 2011 final; while England will take on their Ashes rivals in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Tomorrow, Afghanistan face 1996 champions Sri Lanka in Pune. Read AFG vs SL preview, key battles and how to watch.

Player of the match - Rohit Sharma - 87(101)
9:45 pm: What captains said
Rohit Sharma, India Captain:?This was the game, and the squad was full of character. All of our seasoned players rose to the occasion and won the game for us. Given the state of the competition, we had no choice but to come here and bat. We were challenged right away, and they bowled rather effectively. We wanted to get to a total on a pitch that had something in it so we could play with it. We weren't very well with the bat. Losing three wickets is not a good scenario. It was thrown by a couple of men, including myself. In the grand scheme of things, we fell 30 runs short. It's not something you'd normally see.?When you begin your innings, you must strive to take a few wickets to put pressure on the opponent. You can always count on our seamers to deliver and get those vital breaks. They took advantage of the situation. They placed the ball in the appropriate spots. We have a solid balance (in bowling), with a variety of alternatives and experience. The hitters must score some runs.
Jos Buttler, England Captain:?It was quite disappointing. We fancied ourselves at the midway point, chasing 230, the same old scenario. I wasn't sure if dew would fall. We bowled effectively, got wickets, and could have taken 229 runs. I wanted to soak up some pressure before forming a partnership and killing India's momentum. It all comes down to committing and executing your expertise. There was no pressure from the scoreboard. We are all falling short in some way or another. We are far from our best despite having several excellent players. The powerplay got off to a great start, despite some mediocre bounce. The ground fielding was excellent. We felt that this was the day, but we didn't follow through.?

Jos Buttler, England Captain:?Today, we're going to bowl first. Nothing in particular, just a gut feeling. It's a wonderful event, and maybe we can bring our best today. Today, we want to put on a terrific performance. We haven't done ourselves justice, so we're putting on a show and playing for pride today. It's a fantastic opportunity to play in front of a large audience and against India. We're all on the same squad.

Rohit Sharma, India Captain:?We wanted to bat first, but we've had success batting second. It appears to be a nice pitch, and it is a new surface that has been relayed here. It has performed admirably throughout 100 overs. It's vital to think like way, but it's also important to understand the two points. We've played some excellent cricket. A break is usually beneficial. It's good to be back here and back in business. We're playing the same team as in the last game.
1:25 pm: Pitch Report
This appears to be a Wankhede stadium track from the 1980s and 1990s. This is the fourth game at this location, and we can already see some wear and tear and dry places, so spinners will be used. Batting will get simpler under lights. Quality spinners will be used. I believe it will spin; the question is how much and when. When there is some spin, India becomes more dangerous. If it spins, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali will enter the fray. If the pitch is decent and twists a little, India will be favourites. Ravi Shastri and Nasser Hussain think it's a good pitch.
